The Monstrous Octopus
By Bobby Larsson

The creamy blue octopus of the northern sea

who snatches ships from time to time

was born south of the great reef.

With an eel as mother and

a heavenly beast for father

the monster came into being

long before our own time. With no

less than thirteen tentacles and five eyes

it spends most of its time sleeping.

But every other century it awakens

and there is a fire in the sky and

disorder at sea. These are the signs.

Once it awoke in a time when

all sailors were wise and stayed at home.

The creamy blue octopus came up

onto land where it climbed

the highest mountains of the northwestern

islands, shredding them down as

the enormous tentacles worked their way through

and finally reached the heights, saw the

moon, reached out for it, and fell back

into the sea which it promised never

to leave ever again.
