Secrets of the City Sewers
By Sandhya Falls

She stood in the middle of a busy street, melting in the rain.

Her hair was the first to go. In oily black threads, it slipped off her head, past her shoulders, and slid to the ground, where it was swallowed up by the drain. Her ears, a warm caramel color, were next. They dripped down her body and were gone forever. Her eyes, nose, and mouth stretched downward, pulled by gravity, and then began their southerly trek.

Her arms joined with her neck and torso, the colors of her clothes swirling lazily – purple, green, and brown. Her legs slid out, and snaked their way down the street, to the underground sewers of the city.

As people passed the spot where she had stood, they stepped without stopping over her shoes.
