Blue Pickles
By Catfish McDaris
After trying to cram down three pounds of ham and brown gravy on the best rye bread I’d ever tasted, at the Carnegie Deli in New York City. I headed downstairs to the rat hole piss house to leave a leak. Signed photos were on every inch of the walls. I noticed Clinton, Red Skelton, Babe Ruth, and Vivian Leigh adorning my path. I stumbled into a cat with Shirley Temple sideburns stuffing blue pickles into his pockets. The dude was praying or chanting: gumba, gumbo, shumby, lidowa, ascradido. I saw a pickle turn into a hundred dollar bill. I thought damn that is some cool magic. Then I noticed my wallet lying on the floor and my pal had vanished. I had no recourse, I couldn’t stop the rain.

My name is Catfish McDaris. I'm a journeyman bricklayer & just finished a 30 year gig at the post office in Milwaukee. I've been published widely for 20 years. My most infamous chap is Prying with Jack Micheline & Bukowski. I've been in NYQ, Rattle, Louisiana Review, Chiron, Haight Ashbury, Pearl, Main St. Rag, Slipstream, & Cafe Review. My last big reads were in NYC & The Shakespeare & Co. Bookstore in Paris. I hope we connect.
